One of the common spinal diseases that we deal with is Disc Bulge, Ayurvedic treatment for disc bulge in Kerala at Rasayana Ayurveda centre really proves to be superior to other conventional methods. Instead of dealing with symptoms, our doctors consider what is causing the problem – the imbalance of energy, stress, bad posture, weakness of tissues etc., and design their treatment regimen accordingly. The process involves the use of internal medicine and physiotherapy including Kati Basti, Njavarakizhi and Pizhichil in a calm residential atmosphere away from the hustle of the city. If you are looking for disc bulge treatment in Kerala, then you have found your destination.
The spine consists of vertebrae cushioned by intervertebral discs which consist of an outer ring called annulus fibrosus and an inner ring called nucleus pulposus. A disc bulge is a condition where the intervertebral disc protrudes past its normal lining into the spinal canal without breaking the outer lining.
As a result, the bulge exerts pressure on the nerves surrounding the spinal cord or even the spinal cord itself, and depending on the location, it leads to pain or stiffness among other symptoms. This type of injury occurs over many years of wear, improper posture or continuous stress and at the point when the symptoms arise, the disc will have already lost its natural hydration and elasticity. Not all disc bulges cause symptoms; many of them are diagnosed during scanning for other reasons but if a disc bulge affects the nerve roots, it has serious consequences.
Lumbar Disc Bulge: This develops in the lower back, which bears the body’s weight and mechanical stress. This is the more frequent of the two and is commonly triggered by activities such as heavy lifting, long hours of sitting, or the wear and tear that comes with age. The pain remains localized in the lower back, but at times may radiate to the buttock, thigh, or down a leg, causing tingling sensation in the foot, resulting a condition known as sciatica.
Cervical Disc Bulge: This develops in the neck region, which contains smaller discs but is much more mobile than the lower back, thus prone to strain caused by poor posture, long hours on screen, or a whiplash-like injury. The pain is experienced in the neck and shoulder areas, which may radiate to the arm and hand.
In case of Rasayana, both cases will be managed through therapies that will depend on the regions where the problem lies. For example, for the lumbar region, Kati Basti will be administered, while Greeva Basti will be done for the cervical region. However, the cause of the problem, which is Vata, is the same in both cases, but the treatment varies depending on where the problem occurs.
The ayurvedic approach is holistic, which means that the spine is considered as part of the body’s movement system that is governed mostly by Vata Dosha. Vata is responsible for all motion in the body, including movements of nerves, joints, and fluid that keeps the tissues lubricated.
Disc bulge can be described as the disturbance of Vata in the Kati Pradesha (lower lumbar) or Greeva Pradesha (upper cervical) area. The disturbance of Vata makes the tissues dry, depriving the area of protection and elasticity. It leads to the weakening of the structure and the bulging of the tissue, which results in Shula (pain), Stambha (stiffness), and Sparsha Asahatva (sensitiveness to touch). In Ayurvedic texts, the problem is called Kati Graha or Gridhrasi (if it affects the leg as sciatica does), depending on the form. The disc bulge treatment in Kerala not only focus on the problem but also on strengthening the tissues and restoring the motion that should have been provided by Vata Dosha.
1. Aging and degeneration of discs and their dehydrations
2. Bad posture when sitting, standing, and sleeping for prolonged periods of time
3. Lack of physical activity resulting in poor core and back strength
4. Trauma and injury caused by lifting heavy objects improperly
5. Sudden impact trauma, falls, and accidents causing injuries to the spine
6. Obesity, creating pressure on the spine, especially in its lower segments
7. Long-term aggravation of Vata due to irregular schedule, overconsumption of dry and cold foods, lack of sleep
8. Genetic predispositions to fragile spine structure
1. Dull or intense pain localized in the lower back and neck region
2. Pain extending into the buttock, thigh, leg, shoulder, and arm, based on which disc is affected
3. Numbness and tingling sensation in the nerve distribution
4. Weakness of muscles supplied by the impinged nerve
5. Stiffness more common in the mornings or during prolonged sitting
6. Increased pain upon bending, coughing, or abrupt movement
Decreased range of motion and postural changes
Early symptoms such as stiffness or pain following prolonged sitting periods tend to be overlooked. But at Rasayana, we advise our patients to consult their practitioner even when the symptoms just start showing, as early treatment with Ayurveda will result in faster healing.
Disc bulge treatment in Kerala is based on addressing the underlying causes of aggravated Vata and compromised tissue surrounding the disc, not just by managing pain. That is how sustainable healing happens. The treatments include:
Panchakarma Detoxification: The process starts with removal of Ama (toxins) from the body, ensuring proper pathway for medicines to penetrate into deep tissues of the body.
Kati Basti / Greeva Basti: Warm medicated oil retention in lower back region or neck with the help of dam made of black gram dough. It is one of the most efficient treatment methods for disc problem, as it gives heat and oil penetration in order to relax deep muscles, lubricate joints and directly reduce vata aggravation in the respective region.
Njavarakizhi and Elakizhi: Medicated boluses made from rice or herbal leaves are used to massage the affected region; thereby circulation will be improved, muscles will be strengthened and inflammations will be reduced.
Pizhichil: One of the age-old traditional treatments which involves warm oil therapy on the whole body to improve the condition related to Vata imbalance, muscle strength and nerves, specially when the pain gets referred to other regions due to the bulge.
Abhyanga (Therapeutic Oil Massage): Medicinal oil massage helps to keep the body tissues properly lubricated and reduces stiffness of the body.
Internal Medications: Herbal medicines are prescribed to reduce inflammation, nourish Asthi and Mamsa dhatu and correct the Vata imbalance.
This is one of the first questions that most of the patients tend to ask us, and the truth of the matter is – yes, in most of the cases, surgery is needed. The indications for surgery include the occurrence of severe neurological symptoms like weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or failure to respond to non-surgical management due to intractable pain. As far as mild or moderate disc bulge is concerned, Ayurvedic approach involves addressing the inflammation in the area putting pressure on the nerve, rehydration of the area, building up the strength of the tissues and correcting the Vata imbalance causing the problem in the first place. Kati basti and Greeva basti help relieve the pressure in the local area; whereas panchakarma and internal medications help prevent the recurrences.
Here at Rasayana, our doctors look into the scan results, symptoms of your nervous system and how bad the swelling is to advise a treatment plan. In cases where it is safe and appropriate for you to undergo Ayurvedic treatment, we will inform you and when the condition requires surgery, we will let you know that as well.
