Holistic wellness with Ayurvedic treatment for Parkinson in Kerala

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disorder that affects specific brain regions as individuals age, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and impaired balance. Initially, tremors appear in one hand but can progress to cause stiffness or reduced mobility. These tremors and stiffness are often linked to an imbalance in Vata, as per the Ayurveda perspective.

The disease occurs due to a lack of dopamine, a crucial neurological transmitter. Notably, tremors are mostly noticeable when an individual is even at rest. While the conventional medicines are easily accessible, the traditional method for this disease can be the best approach to Ayurvedic treatment for parkinson’s in Kerala.

Understanding Parkinson’s disease through Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine with roots in ancient wisdom. The Ayurveda term comes from two Sanskrit words. Ayur means life, Veda means knowledge as a whole, which means the science of life. The holistic system is based on three fundamental bio-constituents, or doshas: Vata, Pitta. And Kapha.

Vata governs the movement and mobility, controlling the flow of the body.

Pitta, associated with fire, regulates biochemical processes like digestion, metabolism and many more.

Kapha is linked with the fluid, deals with stiffness, lubrication, and stamina.

Together, these doshas maintain the balance in the body, and their harmony is essential for health. In Ayurveda, Parkinson’s disease is closely associated with Kampavata (a subtype of Vata disorder). It shares symptoms with other Vata Vyadhis (nervous system disorders), such as tremors, stiffness, and impaired movement. Parkinson’s Disease: Cause and Symptoms (

  • Causes

Genetic factors: Parkinson’s disease is related to genetic mutations. Family history can increase the risk, but it's not definitive.

Environmental triggers: Long-term exposure to toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals is a reason for triggers. History of severe head injuries or repeated trauma can also be considered.

Age and Gender: Most cases appear at the age of 60, and men are likely to have it than women.

Other risk factors: The loss of dopamine producing neurons in the substantia nigra (brain controlling movement) can also be due to other reasons such as chronic inflammation or oxidative stress.

  • Symptoms

Resting Tremor: Shaking hand gestures including hands, legs, or chin, when relaxed.

Slow movements: Takes longer to walk, speak, or even to do daily activities and chores.

Stiff muscles: Arms, legs, or neck feel numb, rigid, and difficult to move.

Balance Problems: Frequent stumbling. Fumble, falls, speed changes or stooped posture.

Speech problem: voice becomes soft or mumbled.

Sleep and mood changes: Acting out dreams violently, such as kicking or yelling. Alongside a persistent feeling of anxiety.

Cognitive decline: Not all individuals develop dementia, but they experience cognitive problems like reasoning, thinking, and memory loss with varying severity.

Different stages of Parkinson’s disease

  • Parkinson’s disease has two different phases, one is Tremor Dominant Parkinson’s disease, which represents the majority of patients diagnosed with and the other type is PIGD, Partial Instability Gait Difficulty.
  • Tremor dominant starts at a younger age, say between the ages of 45 and 55, the onset is usually tremor, a sort of rest tremor. It usually starts in the hands and then it spreads to the opposite side, and it may involve such as the lips, chin, jaw, and legs. But the fact is that it never involves the head. Therefore, if one sees an individual with oscillation of the head like that is a sign that the individual has Parkinson’s.
  • PIGD is a condition that causes some difficulty with balance, with a tendency to fall backward and then develop flaws. These defects appear early in the disease’s progression. The natural course of progression in PIGD is much more rapid than that of dominant tremor. This situation does not respond to medications.

Parkinson's disease is also differentiated according to the Age of onset.

  • Juvenile Parkinson’s disease: starts from childhood; it is a rare kind of Parkinson's.
  • Young-onset Parkinson’s disease: This starts at the age of 20 to 30. These segments allowed patients to respond to age quickly and effectively.
  • Late onset Parkinson's disease: this is more PIGD kind, where the patients face balance issues early on, and they also develop cognitive decline early on, and dementia becomes a very dominant feature.
