Osteoarthritis better known as Sandhigata Vata, is a progressive degenerative joint disorder characterized by the gradual breakdown of articular cartilage the smooth, cushioning surface at the ends of bones. This condition develops when the protective cartilage surface at the ends of bones wears down over time, leading to painful friction between bones, inflammation, and structural changes in the joint.
In an Ayurveda perspective, OA primarily results from aggravated Vata dosha, which controls the movement and mobility in the body. When Vata becomes imbalanced due to factors like aging (Dhatu kshaya), improper diet, stress, it leads to the physical condition of drying of synovial fluid (Shushkata), reduced joint lubrication (Rukshata), Degeneration of cartilage and bone tissue. Rasayana Ayurveda Centre provides the best holistic approach in treating osteoarthritis, as it is ideal for Ayurvedic treatment in Kochi.
Joint Overuse & Injuries: Sandhigata Vata worsens due to the repetitive stress, drying joints. Ayurveda uses snehanam (oiling), Swedanam (fomentation), and Rasayanas, that is the rejuvenation therapies like shallaki to restore lubrication and repair tissues.
Obesity: Excess weight can place pressure and strain on the joints, aggravating kapha-Vata. Treatments include Udwarthanam (herbal scrub), lekhna Basti (fat-reducing enema), including metabolism boosting herbs like guggulu and triphala.
Genetic reasons: Early joint weakness is caused by Beeja Dushti, a genetic disability.
Metabolic disorders: (Ama) toxins accumulate in the body over the years by passing through and digestive inflaming the joints. Other metabolic disorders that occur in osteoarthritis in Diabetes.
In Ayurveda, morning stiffness reflects Vata Aggravation, which accumulates overnight due to dryness (Rukshata). Inactivity allows Ama to settle in joints, causing pain. This Osteoarthritis discomfort eases with gentle movement as circulation improves.
Swelling indicates Kapha imbalances with fluid retention, while tenderness suggests localized Ama. Ayurveda uses anti-inflammatory herbs like Shallaki and Guggulu to reduce swelling and restore proper joint fluid balance naturally.
Stiff, inflexible joints signal loss of Snigdha (oiliness) in cartilage, vata disorders. Panchakarma therapies, Abhyanga (oil massage) and Janu Basti (oil pooling) replenish lubrication to make smooth movement over time, and they give relaxation.
When dried synovial fluid is unable to cushion bones, the grinding sensation happens.
Guggulu is for rebuilding the connecting tissues, also it helps in removing metabolic waste.
Shallaki is for reducing swelling and thereby providing pain relief.
Ashwagandha easily helps to strengthen bones and reduce inflammation.
